Google’s Skillshop (Free)
Google’s Skillshop is Google’s hub for learning and courses, with a wide variety of topics available. If you want to gain knowledge in Google Ads, there’s no better place to learn than from Google themselves. Featuring a robust selection of topics, broken down into defined modules, these courses offer an excellent start for beginners. There’s no time limit on completing the courses, so you can learn at your own pace.
We’d recommend starting with the basics such as the Google Ads search course. This starts by teaching you how to create basic text ads that you see within the search results. From there it takes you through how to group your ads, run multiple groups featuring different keywords and how to add extensions to your adverts. After you’ve mastered search ads, take a look at display advertising for more graphic focused marketing.
There are also options for video and shopping adverts which will allow you to advertise on YouTube or feature specific products within Google’s shopping feed. These are typically more advanced than search and display courses and we’d thoroughly recommend covering the basic fundamentals first.
Google’s Skillshop is a great place to start for the basics and will certainly help you get your campaigns up and running. However, if you’re looking for something a bit more advanced, or some extra tips and tricks, there are better courses out there.
Udemy’s Google Ads for Beginners (Paid – £199.99)
Udemy is one of the best places to find online courses for all types of topics, even beyond Google Ads. The course we’d recommend is their in-depth ‘Google Ads for Beginners’, which includes 49 lectures, spanning a total of 3.5 hours. This comprehensive course is for beginners who want to gain a solid foundation before then learning some more advanced techniques. The course gives an in-depth overview of the fundamentals, as well as touching on the more advanced areas of Google Ads, such as display, remarketing and A/B split testing.
The course costs £199.99, which may make the course less appealing, especially as there are many free high-quality courses out there. However, if you want a comprehensive course that delivers in being both informative and concise, there aren’t many better choices out there.
WordStream’s PPC University (Free)
WordStream is a tool which allows you to automate and streamline your Google Ads account, saving you countless hours. Whilst WordStream is a paid service, they do also offer a completely free ‘university’ which explains what PPC is and how to manage your ads effectively. Their knowledge centre is packed full of helpful documents, covering almost every aspect of pay-per-click advertising. There’s no time limit on this platform, so you can sit down and learn at your own page and even implement the learning as you go. Each topic is segmented into its own page, which is great if you’re looking to brush up your knowledge of a certain aspect.
However, it’s not a course in the same sense as the other providers we’ve mentioned. It’s more of a knowledge base, with articles focusing on related topics, rather than worksheets or videos. This is a great resource nevertheless and will be invaluable in developing your knowledge.
Another amazing free course is SEMrush Academy’s PPC fundamentals course. There are 36 lessons in the 8 modules. With an estimated time of 5 hours, this should be easy to get through in a few days. The course covers a wide variety of PPC topics, from search ads, to bid strategies and budgets.
It’s a great course to get you up to date with the basics of Google Ads, however, it is quite limited so we wouldn’t recommend it for those who are seeking more advanced skills. The lesson structure consists of videos which are easy to follow, as well as further reading, which supports and expands upon the content of the videos. At the end of each lesson, there is a quiz covering what you’ve just learnt to help ensure that you retain your knowledge.

Lynda: Google Ads Essential Training (Freemium)
Lynda, formally known as LinkedIn Learning, is a training platform that hosts hundreds of training courses and videos across a range of topics. They have a brilliant Google Ads course which covers the main basics and more. This course has the added bonus of being free, however, a subscription is required for many of the other courses on Lynda.
The course goes into detail about the essential knowledge you’ll need to effectively manage your Google Ads campaigns. It also goes further by explaining how to report on your Google Ads performance in Google Analytics, which gives you better oversight on how your campaign is doing and whether you need to make adjustments or not.
This course is completely free at the time of writing. If you’re interested in going beyond the essentials and gaining access to the paid courses you can sign up for a one-month free trial. After this period the service costs £24.98 per month, which can be a cost-effective way of learning if you complete a handful of courses each year.
